Snow!

Western Washington got hit with an insane amount of snow over the past week. In fact, I think we broke a record and last time we got this much snow was back in 1945. We had about 7 inches on Monday, the 4th. It warmed up just a tad over the next couple of days, leaving us with about 4 inches when the second storm hit.
Now, it probably wouldn’t have been so bad if wind wasn’t also a factor. Thursday night, to the following Monday it snowed and we had a windstorm. I stopped measuring at 10 inches one day, and that was between two snowstorms. I know in parts of our backyard it was more than knee deep thanks to the drifts caused by the wind.
Letting our chickens out each morning and getting them some feed was quite the operation. I had to use a hiking pole to make it all the way out there from our back door. I had to make two trips, because we brought their feed and water in each night. I couldn’t hold everything and hang onto the hiking pole at the same time, all the while trying to make sure I didn’t get taken out by our husky. She was in absolute heaven.
We have only ventured out to play in this mess of snow a few times thanks to all the wind, but we had a blast when we did. Last night we made snowmen, had a snowball fight and Wildchild made what he calls guardians at the bottom of our stairs.
I am so ready for all of this snow to be gone, even though it’s pretty. I have been itching to get into the garden and we really need to finish up the bigger run we started when the first snowstorm hit. I’ve been dreaming of getting a little greenhouse set up so that we can get seeds started earlier. I’ve been grazing this really awesome permaculture book and have visions of an abundance of homegrown food dancing in my head.
Until Spring finally arrives, I will just have to keep daydreaming of the garden adventures we will have.

A Dream Realized
Exciting things are happening here over at The Wild Paduanos! We recently stepped out of that dreaded comfort zone and took some huge steps toward our dream. I wish I could say that we finally purchased our dream land, but we aren’t quite there yet. Hopefully sooner rather than later!
Sorry for Disappearing
I am so sorry for disappearing, again. Things have been quiet on the blog for awhile now, despite my intentions otherwise. Adding Wildbaby into the mix has been a lot harder than I had imagined. She is such a velcro baby that it is hard to get much accomplished besides nursing and if I am lucky, a thirty minute workout.
Spike Down: Harvesting My First Deer
My second season started after my wife. She was able to go down before me with her dad. While she was there on her last night she tagged out. So not only did she tag out before me she also got a deer before me. She got a nice doe too. My first year I didn’t get to tag out despite seeing deer and releasing some arrows.
